I've been working on a new book recently about power and childbirth. Who are the power players in childbirth today and what does a powerful birth look like?
Here's a bit I wrote about power from the introduction of the book. I'd love to hear your thoughts on power and birth as well!
First, I want to define power as I will use it in this book. Power is an energy that has motion, similar to a car. When we turn our car on the power starts and we can move. Powerful is a forward motion; when you’re powerful you can see everything in front of you and you are in control. Powerless is a backward motion where you can’t see as well and you’re struggling to keep control. To me, a powerful birth is not necessarily a natural birth. While most natural births that are fully supported are often powerful experiences births where medication was used or surgery can also be powerful experiences depending on the circumstances. The point is for the power to move you forward. If it hasn’t then it’s not powerful.
What are your thoughts on power?
